3) What is a clause?

 Consider the following sentence :

The School where we study.

In the above sentence the words "Where we study" is not a sentence because it does not make complete sense.

Neither is it a phrase because it contains a subject "We" and a predicate "Study".

Such a group of words, which forms a part of a sentence and contains a subject and a predicate is known as a clause.

A clause is a group of words containing a subject and predicate (of its own) and forming part of a sentence.

  Consider the following examples :

1. She sat down, started to read, but went to sleep.

She sat down and (she) started to read, but (she) went to sleep.

2. Shall we take the bus or the taxi.

Shall we take the bus or (Shall we take) the taxi.
